How to Use the Guitar Fretboard Note Trainer
The Play Like A Pro Fretboard Note Trainer is a free online guitar practice tool designed to help you learn and memorise the notes on the guitar fretboard.
Instead of answering a quiz by clicking a screen, you use your real guitar. The trainer gives you a note to find, listens through your device's microphone and tells you when you play the correct pitch.
You can practise natural notes, sharps and flats, work on one string at a time, restrict your practice to different fret ranges and test how quickly you can find notes anywhere on the guitar neck.
Enable Your Microphone
Press Enable Microphone and allow your browser to access your device's microphone.
The trainer uses your microphone to detect the single notes you play on your guitar. Your audio is analysed locally in your browser and is not uploaded or stored by Play Like A Pro.
Calibrate the Microphone
For more accurate note detection, press Calibrate Mic.
First, keep quiet while the trainer measures the background noise in your room. It will then ask you to play a normal single guitar note a few times.
The trainer uses this information to adjust its listening threshold for your instrument and environment.
Calibration can be particularly useful when practising with an unplugged electric guitar or a quieter acoustic guitar.
Start With Natural Notes or Practise All Notes
If you're just starting to learn the guitar fretboard, begin with Natural Notes.
This reduces the amount of information you need to learn at once.
Once you can find the natural notes confidently, switch to All Notes to introduce sharps and flats and practise all 12 chromatic notes.
You can also choose whether accidentals are displayed as sharps or flats.

The trainer includes four different ways to practise finding notes on the guitar neck.
Find a Note
The trainer gives you a random note such as:
Your job is to play a C anywhere on the guitar fretboard.
Once the microphone recognises the correct note, you'll receive instant feedback and the trainer will give you another note.
This is a good place to start if you already know some fretboard notes but want to improve your overall recall.
String Mastery
String Mastery helps you learn the guitar fretboard one string at a time.
Choose the 6th, 5th, 4th, 3rd, 2nd or 1st string and the trainer will only ask you to find notes on that string.
Each String Mastery session contains 20 targets and tracks your accuracy, response time and best streak.
Working through the fretboard one string at a time makes a large guitar neck much easier to learn than trying to memorise every note at once.
Fretboard Challenge
Once individual strings start to feel comfortable, switch to Fretboard Challenge.
The trainer now chooses both a random note and a random string.
This forces you to navigate between different areas of the guitar rather than relying on the same familiar note positions.
Start with a small fret range and gradually expand it as your fretboard knowledge improves.
60 Second Challenge
Think you know the fretboard?
The 60 Second Challenge tests how quickly you can recall note locations under pressure.
You then have 60 seconds to play as many requested notes as possible.
Your recent scores are stored locally on your device so you can come back and try to beat your previous result.
How to Memorise Guitar Fretboard Notes Faster
Knowing that you can find a note and being able to find it instantly are two different skills.
If you have to start at the open string and count:
...then you haven't fully memorised that position yet.
The goal of fretboard training is to gradually replace calculation with instant recall.
You don't need to learn the entire guitar neck in one practice session.
Five focused minutes spent actively finding notes can be much more useful than staring at a fretboard diagram and hoping the locations eventually stick.

Why Learn the Notes on the Guitar Fretboard?
It's possible to play guitar for years using chord shapes, scale boxes and TAB without really knowing which notes you're playing.
But learning the notes gives you a much clearer map of the instrument.
Instead of thinking only in shapes, you can begin to understand where your chord roots are, recognise notes inside scales and chords, communicate more easily with other musicians and navigate between different areas of the neck with more confidence.
The objective isn't to stand there naming notes for the sake of it.

What is the best way to learn the notes on the guitar fretboard?
A good approach is to learn the fretboard in smaller sections rather than trying to memorise the entire neck at once. Start with natural notes, practise one string at a time and gradually expand the fret range. Once those positions become familiar, mix different strings together and test how quickly you can find each note.
Should I learn the natural notes on guitar first?
Yes. Starting with A, B, C, D, E, F and G gives you fewer note locations to remember. Once you can find the natural notes confidently, switch the trainer to All Notes and introduce sharps and flats.
How do I memorise guitar fretboard notes faster?
Focus on active recall rather than only looking at fretboard diagrams. Ask yourself where a note is, try to find it on the guitar and only check the answer if you get stuck. Regular short practice sessions can help turn slow note counting into faster fretboard recall.
What fret range should a beginner practise?
Frets 0β5 are a good starting point because they give you a manageable section of the neck to learn. Once those notes feel comfortable, expand to frets 0β12 and eventually the full 0β24 fret range.
Can I use the trainer with an unplugged electric guitar?
Yes, although an unplugged electric guitar can be much quieter than an acoustic guitar or amplified electric guitar. If the microphone struggles to detect your notes, move closer to your device, select High microphone sensitivity and use the Calibrate Mic option.
Why isn't the microphone detecting my guitar note?
Make sure microphone permission has been enabled in your browser and play one clear note at a time. Let the previous note stop ringing before playing another. If your guitar is quiet, try High sensitivity or recalibrate the microphone for your instrument and room.
Does the fretboard trainer include sharps and flats?
Yes. You can practise only natural notes or switch to all 12 chromatic notes. You can also choose whether accidentals are displayed using sharp names such as F# or flat names such as Gb.
